Lake Herrington water level expected to rise next week

Kentucky Utilities

The water level at Herrington Lake in central Kentucky is expected to rise next week. Kentucky Utilities drew down the lake five feet lower than the typical winter pool level to accommodate work on the outer layer of Dix Dam. KU Spokesman Daniel Lowry said the work to place a protective coating on the dam was scheduled to start after the summer boating season.

“And we held off as long as we could to try to make as little impact to the boaters and to the lake as possible. We wanted to make as little impact to the lake as possible to folks who use it,” said Lowry.

The Dix Dam sits near the E.W. Brown power generating plant. The Mercer County facility is multi-faceted, running as a hydro-electric, coal fired, natural gas, and solar-based power generator. While the lack of rainfall this autumn impacted the Herrington Lake water level, Lowry said it allowed workers to speed up the timeline for completing the project. Work on a higher portion of Dix Dam is anticipated to continue through November. Lowry said it’s not expected to impact the winter pool level.

Kentucky Utilities is a sponsor of Weku programming.
