Hunting season safety measures go beyond gun usage

Kentucky State Police

The hunting season for deer across Kentucky is about to gear up in just a couple of weeks. Hunter safety measures cover a variety of issues, even beyond the actual shooting of guns. Kentucky State Police report a lost hunter in Scott County was found early this Friday morning. Josh Satterly is a trooper with KSP in Lawrenceburg.

“Our aircraft was approved to come and assist in locating the individual and they used their flare infrared radar and they located him in the woods and they sent the coordinates to the guys on the ground and they went in and removed him from the woods,” said Satterly.

Satterly said it’s an unusual situation in this part of the state, but it happens more in the Red River Gorge region.

“They’re doing it regularly. You know they’re emergency management officials up there, they recover people out of there regularly. This is just rare around central Kentucky,” said Satterly.

Satterly said Scott County Emergency Management Services evaluated the hunter and found he suffered no injuries. In addition to a handheld light, officials say it’s always good to let others know where you are going to hunt and the timing of hunting. The modern gun season for deer runs from November 12th through the 27th.
