Advocates are working to bring attention to domestic violence incidents in Kentucky. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence ranks the commonwealth the highest in the nation for intimate partner and family abuse.

Angela Yannelli is the C-E-O of Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence. During a press conference in Frankfort, she said the abuse people endure is not always physical.

“Many people associate domestic violence with bruises and battering of the body, but that is only one of many behaviors that abusers use to make themselves feel powerful by hurting and controlling others. Verbal and emotional abuse are pervasive and common.”

At that same press conference, Andrea Robinson, executive director of the OASIS Domestic Violence Shelter, said advocates need to do more than make sure survivors are safe.

“We need to be welcoming, dignified paths to safety from abuse. That we find ways to remove the many roadblocks survivors encounter on their journey towards health, safety, self-esteem, dignity, connectedness, wholeness and much more.”

Earlier this week, Governor Beshear signed a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Kentucky.
