More financial assistance is on the way for flood survivors in eastern Kentucky. Officials with Berea College have announced over one million dollars will be made available to help in recovery efforts in the flood impacted region.
Lyle Roelofs is the president of Berea College. He said the college had these fund ready should anything happen.
“These funds come from rainy day funds, reserve funds that we maintain in the event of difficulties we might have to face ourselves. Since we have this relationship with the region, we figure that a rainy day that hits somewhere in the region is a rainy day for us too.”
He said they want to make education a high priority for this money’s use.
“I’m calling every judge executive in the impacted counties and making sure we know of all the school systems in each county, we know of the big public systems of course, but there might be private schools, church related schools and so on, and we are sending an invitation to apply for funding.”
Roelofs said schools could get up to $50-thousand dollars for each system. The money will be administered through the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and the Mountain Association.
