Many people in eastern Kentucky lost all their possessions in last month’s deadly floods. That also includes children who lost their toys and supplies they need for school.
The city of Salyersville and Magoffin County schools are holding a toy drive this week for flood survivors. Chris Meadows is the superintendent of Magoffin County Schools. He said there have been many drives for cleaning supplies and food and they wanted to focus on kids.
“We felt like that, just like with COVID, we kept saying “we need to get back to normal, we need some sense of normalcy.” Play and having toys and using your imagination, that is also something that is normal for kids, for students,” Meadows said.
He said this will also include gathering school supplies.
“We decided rather quickly that we would add school supplies to that list just to help those families and students out a little more. As they are looking to get into their school years in the neighboring districts.”
Meadows said when it comes to school supplies, items like paper, pencils, pens, crayons, and glue sticks are recommended.
The drive concludes Friday afternoon. Donated items are being accepted at Magoffin County Schools, the county board of education, Salyersville City Hall and the health department.
