Filling out forms and scouring websites is a part of the recovery process for flood survivors in eastern Kentucky. That task can be made more difficult if eyeglasses are needed. VSP Vision is a not-for-profit vision insurance group that helps people after natural disasters.

Susan Shafer is the director of corporate communications for VSP Vision. She said they wanted to help in eastern Kentucky.

“We’re able to help people get access in times of disaster so everything folks in eastern Kentucky are facing right now as a result of the flood, we’re hoping to come in and be able to help out, especially those wearing glasses or contacts.”

Shafer said her organization has partnered with the American Red Cross.

“ Folks can go to Redcross.org, visit their local chapter. Once there, they can request what’s called a VSP Eyes of Hope gift certificate and what that gift certificate will do or help them with is get an eye exam and eyeglasses.”

Shafer said the certificates can be used at local eye doctors. She says that recovery does take some time and VSP will be offering this service as long as it is needed in eastern Kentucky.
