A judge’s decision has rendered abortion illegal in most cases once again in Kentucky. The Commonwealth’s trigger law was reinstated that took effect when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Tamarra Wieder is the Kentucky state director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. She said this ban will cause a lot of harm to Kentuckians.
“Maternal mortality is expected in increase by 21% with a ban on abortion and for Black women, that actually increases by 33%. We already have double the national average for maternal mortality in Kentucky, so this is going to have significantly devastating effects across the Commonwealth.”
Angela Cooper is a spokeswoman for the ACLU of Kentucky. She said the battle is far from over.
“We’re certainly not giving up. Kentuckians deserve better and political grandstanding and to play games with our healthcare. We’re going to continue to fight this fight and hopefully we will prevail.”
Kentucky Right to Life is a group that opposes abortion. In an emailed statement they praised the Attorney General for -quote- “defending the laws of our Commonwealth.”-unquote-
Cameron is running for governor as a Republican. Both he and the ACLU are working to move the case to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
