Residents in five Eastern Ky counties can now apply for federal aid.

Renters and homeowners in eastern Kentucky hit by the recent flooding and mudslides can now apply for federal aid. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened the way for individual assistance for residents of five counties.

Nate Custer is a spokesman for FEMA. He said this money is a way to help people out who may not be as covered as they thought.

“Some people may have insurance, but they may be under insured, coverage though in this disaster is going to be the federal flood insurance. That’s a separate category from general homeowners.”

He said the window to apply does not stay open long.

“Generally, it’s a 60 day period and we would urge people to not put it off, go ahead and file.”

Custer said currently only residents in five counties can apply for the individual assistance. Those counties are Breathitt, Clay, Knott, Letcher, and Perry. He did say more counties could be added in the near future.

Homeowners and renters in the designated counties can apply for FEMA assistance online at disasterassistance.gov, or by calling 800-621-3362.
