Utility crews have been able to more than cut in half the number of customers without power due to widespread flooding in eastern Kentucky. At the peak of outages, about 23,000 Kentucky Power customers were without electricity. By midday Monday it stood at about 11,000. Kentucky Power Spokeswoman Cindy Wiseman said more steps will be taken before individual homes are turned back on.
“There will be a process around inspections. You have to have a..it’s federal code..you have to have an electrical inspection. And some people will have to replace their meters, which we will help with obviously,” said Wiseman.
Wiseman said for those flood victims who have lost their homes or seen extensive damage, it could be months before all electrical hookups are complete.
Wiseman noted much of the power disruption came through downed poles and hundreds of spans of wire. The Kentucky Power representative added 800 repair crew members from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan are all working on restoration.
