Mountain Parkway Expansion project may cause delays this week in Magoffin County

KYTC

Drivers on the Mountain Parkway in Magoffin County may experience delays through Wednesday afternoon as bridge work takes place. A new bridge is being built over Johnson Creek and Cutano-Hager Road. Once complete, the project will widen the parkway to four lanes.

Brenna Angel is a spokesperson for the Mountain Parkway Expansion project. Angel said state police and flaggers will be in place around mile marker 65 to alert drivers to slow down.

“There may be some intermittent traffic closures where the roadway in both directions will be completely shut down. And that gives our contractor, the construction crews, plenty of time to get the truck in, have the crane lift up the beams and set them in place and then move along and then the whole process continues,” said Angel.

Angel said 20 beams will be set for the new bridge that will eventually carry eastbound traffic.

The Mountain Parkway Expansion spokesperson said delays will hopefully be no more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

“So we're just asking folks to be aware, plan their travel accordingly. But ultimately, this is a short term minor inconvenience for what folks know will be a wider, safer Mountain Parkway down the road,” explained Angel.

The Magoffin County West segment of the Mountain Parkway Expansion is set to be complete in 2023.
