Anti-Abortion groups preparing for an abortion ban in the Commonwealth

Anti-Abortion organizations in Kentucky are keeping a close watch on the U.S. Supreme Court. A decision could come down any day that would overturn Roe V. Wade. The 1973 landmark decision allows legal access to abortion across the U.S. If that comes to pass, these groups are getting ready.

Addia Wuchner is the executive director of Kentucky Right to Life and a former state lawmaker. She said they already have support systems in place.

“Women and child programs across the Commonwealth have grown exponentially since Roe. We have many pregnancy care centers across the Commonwealth and education centers who are there as an outreach to women. They’ve been reaching out for years to the abortion-minded woman, but I think those are just going to expand.”

She said her group wants to protect children and the women carrying them.

“If Roe is overturned, and unborn children can be protected, we’ll be better able to also serve, not just the vulnerable children, but these vulnerable women.”

Abortion rights advocates are concerned that people in rural areas will not have access to the healthcare they need if abortions are banned in the state.

Wuchner says the passage of House Bill 174, this past session of the General Assembly will help. This law extends Medicaid services to new mothers for up to twelve months after having a baby.
