The FBI is warning businesses in Kentucky and seven other states about a phone scheme. People are using stolen credit card numbers to make large purchases by telephone.
A news release from the agency’s Charlotte, North Carolina Division on Monday, says victims have been targeted in Kentucky North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and West Virginia.
According to the FBI, more than 100 businesses have been targeted this year. The types of businesses being scammed include tire stores, furniture stores, lumber companies, trailer businesses, and appliance stores.
The FBI Charlotte office says it is working with several local law enforcement agencies on the investigation.
