A 33 year-old woman has died after being hospitalized for an extended period of time. Gov. Beshear announced Monday that the woman was pregnant. The baby lived six days after being born. Eighty people have now died from the storms in Kentucky.
“Yet another tough toll from the most devastating weather event that we have ever experienced,” Beshear said. “To their family — I know you've already grieved for that infant and now are grieving for her mother; we grieve with you, we care about you.”
Beshear also said Monday that the state will begin moving people out of state parks into travel trailers and some will be able to go back to their homes.
“As we move forward, it's getting people back into the flow of not just self sufficiency, but getting back and getting closer to being in their homes back in their lives,” he said.
The state has created a new website to help connect storm survivors with resources and to provide another outlet for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reach survivors. Beshear said people are not answering calls from FEMA.
“We'll spend all day long calling the cell phones that people left with FEMA, and not enough of them are picking up,” he said. “So this is an option for people to directly register with us.”
The governor also addressed the commonwealth’s coronavirus cases. He said cases have declined again for a fourth week. Although Beshear said the number of hospitalizations, people in ICUs and on ventilators are heading in the right direction, but deaths have yet to decline.
“Deaths still staying fairly high — we hope that that will follow the rest of the trend shortly,” Beshear said. “Again, we're also having younger people continue to die almost entirely unvaccinated and preventable.”
The state’s positivity rate is 12.74%.
