The legalization of marijuana is a recurring topic in Frankfort this legislative session. The president of the Kentucky Senate said he’s still seeking additional information about marijuana use for medicinal purposes. Twin bills seeking to make marijuana legal for both medicinal and recreational uses have been filed. Senate President Robert Stivers said there are statistically significant indicators how cannabis can aid in the treatment of many medical conditions.
“But every study that I have read says that the duration was too short, the sample pool was too small, and that further study needed to be done. I’m not opposed to it, but we need to do it in a way that’s measured,” said Stivers.
Marijuana has been used to treat nausea, joint inflammation, and seizures.
The president of the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky said the Foundation board has not taken a position on the legalization of marijuana. Ben Chandler noted supporters of the change argue why not tax it for beneficial revenues.
“Wouldn’t that be better than just letting it fly around illegally, when people are using it anyway, you’re going to get the negative effects regardless,” said Chandler.
Chandler said there are also concerns regarding legalization. He said it’s never a good idea to smoke it because of the effect on the lungs. The Foundation president added pregnant women shouldn’t use it and a prohibition based on the age of 21 doesn’t always work. A legislative hearing on marijuana legalization hasn’t taken place yet.
