During a news conference on Thursday, Gov. Beshear announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for tornado survivors to apply for aid. Originally set for Feb. 11, storm survivors may now apply until March 13.
Beshear said 66 people are awaiting placement in travel trailers, which he called “intermediate housing” intended to house people for six months to a year.
“Focus will continue to be placed on six priority counties: That’s Warren, Caldwell, Graves, Hopkins, Marshall, and Muhlenberg,” Beshear said. “Priorities are for families.”
In total, 200 travel trailers will be distributed, but so far that number is 18.
“I would guess within the next month, we will have most of them filled,” Beshear said. “And that's that also might require some tough conversations about, you know, at some point that hotel or motel is going to need their rooms back.”
Beshear said the agency is having trouble reaching survivors by phone, which is delaying distribution of the trailers.
“If you've applied for FEMA assistance, and that's how we get the number and you see a number that you don't recognize pop up on your phone, please answer it,” he said.
