More winter weather is headed for the Bluegrass State. Kentucky is expected to see the full range of rain, freezing rain, snow, and ice over the next couple of days. Power outages are a serious concern. Joe Arnold is with Kentucky Electric Co-ops. He said these incoming conditions can have lasting impacts.
"Ice is unrelenting, unforgiving, and frankly, even after the ice comes through it can end up having residual effects even days later depending upon whether there is a warmup or not in temperatures."
Utility crews are preparing for the possibility of outages. Arnold said dealing with ice takes time.
“As that glazes on there, to those trees and to the equipment itself on the electric lines, that ends up having a long term effect because the trees that are coated with ice aren’t just coated with ice the first day, if the temperatures are still cold the second day, it's imagine carrying all that weight on you for that period of time.”
Most of the snow and ice is expected to hit the west and central portions of the state. Much of eastern Kentucky is under a flood watch from the National Weather Service.
