The Kentucky Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution honoring its connection with Taiwan. The recognition of the Taiwanese delegation included a thank you for $100,000. The money was donated to help tornado victims in western Kentucky. Northern Kentucky Senator Chris McDaniel said this connection carries meaning beyond an exchange of cultural and educational ideas.

“Because this is a much, much bigger deal than just educational and economic alliances. This is about people who want to continue to live free and that’s something we should all remain committed to,” said McDaniel.

In his remarks to the Senate, Taiwan Consul General Elliot Wang began by offering a tribute to former Kentucky Senator Tom Buford who died last summer. Wang called Buford a “trusted longtime friend.”

He said the two governments support each other.

“When you were in need Taiwan was there, donating millions of PPE to the United States, including more than 80,000 masks to Kentucky. And when we were in need, the U.S. sent vital doses of vaccines. So, together we have saved so many lives,” explained Wang.

Senate President Robert Stivers said there is an understanding between Kentucky and Taiwan. He noted Taiwan benefits from Kentucky’s corn, wheat, and soybeans. The Senate leader added it makes sense to further the connection.
