Memorial Day Travel Predicted To Increase 60%

Nearly a quarter of Kentuckians are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day Weekend. That’s according to Bluegrass Triple A. Spokesperson Lori Weaver Hawkins says a 60% increase in travel is anticipated this summer compared to a year ago.

She says travel could even rival figures from a pre-pandemic period. “Compared to 2019 this Memorial Day Weekend, our predictions aren’t quite as high as that was, but who knows, we might actually see those numbers get close to what we had in 2019,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Nationally, Weaver Hawkins says 34 million out of the anticipated 37 million total are expected to travel by car this weekend.

Gasoline prices have been ticking up.  Weaver Hawkins says about a dime increase has been seen in Lexington the past week.   Triple A is prepared to assist some 1500 motorists this weekend in Central Kentucky.  “We’re happy to do so, but we would rather people’s Memorial Day Weekend not be ruined by a breakdown on the side of the road,” explained Weaver Hawkins.

So, an overall check of vehicles including the tires, battery, brakes, and fluid levels is recommended.
