Kentucky Parks Officials Expecting Golf And Camping Increases To Continue

parks.ky.gov

Officials with Kentucky’s state parks are hoping lots of visitors this spring and summer bring their golf clubs with them.  When it came to golf at state parks during coronavirus in 2020, the numbers were positive.

Kentucky Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer said June through September last year saw a 22% increase over the same period in 2019. “We’re gearing up and planning for golf to grow more and to accommodate the increase in golf and the energy that’s coming with that,” explained Meyer.

Meyer said there’s been a big surge in camping activity at many of the state’s 45 parks.  He noted the state’s largest revenue producing camp at Fort Boonesboro is currently shut down due to flood damage.  Meyer expects it to open August to September with improved RV power capability.   “We will have 50 amp and 30-amp access in that campground at every spot.  So, for the long term it’s better, for the short term, we’re going to suffer this summer,” Meyer said.

The parks commissioner said lodge attendance fell last year with a drop off in group reservations.  Meyer added group sales are on the uptick.
