Motorists need to be on the lookout for potholes throughout the year, but the freeze and thaw cycle during winter months creates the perfect conditions for pavement breakup.
District State Transportation Spokeswoman Natasha Lacy says heavy rains can also play a role in pothole development. “Just an ongoing cycle actually because you have such a high volume of traffic as I mentioned on all your roadways now, and you have heavy truck traffic on all the roadways as well. So, it’s just a situation where we’re always working on potholes and we’re always taken care of those throughout the year,” said Lacy.
Springtime is thought of as a time when potholes are filled. And while the winter months do create problems, Lacy said potholes are a year-round challenge. “You’ve got temperatures that will get really high with heat in our summer months and then, of course, low and those are extremes that you go through a cycle with during a year’s time with different seasons,” explained Lacy.
Pothole repairs along Interstate 75 in Madison County are scheduled during four overnight periods next week. Rolling roadblocks will occur during the midnight to 6:00 a.m. periods Monday through Thursday.
