A representative of the U.S. Census Bureau says Kentucky, as a state, is doing relatively well in getting information to the federal agency. But, June Iljana said work still remains, particularly in southeast Kentucky. Iljana said less than 50% response is found in 15 counties and under 40% in a few others.
The Census spokeswoman added hiring of census takers continues. “We are still filling in our bench at this point. Part of this response to try to get this all finished before September 30th is that we plan to hire more people than we originally intended and also we are paying census takers bonuses really based on the number of hours that they are able to work,” said Iljana.
Iljana said the end of September deadline, ahead of an earlier projected endpoint, is needed to meet the statutory deadline to provide results by the end of the year. “Our goal and our expectation is that we will get a complete count, even in those counties that are lagging behind right now because our plan includes putting our resources where they are most needed in those counties. Everyone will get a visit at their door,” explained Iljana.
The U.S. Census rep noted door to door workers are taking coronavirus preventive measures by wearing masks and staying six feet away.
