Governor Beshear says it’s time for the Confederate Statue of Jefferson Davis to be taken out of the state capitol rotunda. Removal of the statue has been a debated topic for decades.
During his nightly briefing, Beshear said there is a more suitable location for the 15 foot marble statue. “I believe that Jefferson Davis’ statue is a symbol that divides us. Even if there are those that think it’s a part of history, there should be a better place to put in in historic context,” said Beshear.
Beshear has for weeks spoke about the pain brought about by coronavirus. The governor said there should be compassion for all pain. He said the statue is hurtful to some in Kentucky and asked quote, “doesn’t that at least justify it not sitting where it does now?
Governor Beshear continues to push the importance of coronavirus testing to help keep the spread of the disease in check. The governor said he is concerned about what he called “testing fatigue.” Beshear added there’s been a slowing of testing at some drive through locations. “If you’re running a business you ought to want your employees to continue to go to get tested so that someone who is asymptomatic doesn’t spread it throughout the office or the factory or the environment that they work in,” explained Beshear.
State Public Health Commissioner Steven Stack said a minimum yardstick is to keep the state’s COVID-19 positivity rate below ten percent. He said the Commonwealth is well below that. The governor reported 295 new coronavirus cases and eight deaths.
