A Mental Health First Aid Training Program would be established under a bill passed in the Kentucky Senate Thursday. The House measure directs the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to develop the training.
Clark County Senator and Doctor Ralph Alvarado said it’s aimed at helping professionals and other members of the public identify and assist those struggling with mental health issues. “It will create the ability to assist an individual going through a mental health or substance abuse crisis. That is to recognize symptoms, provide initial help, referring individuals to the right resources. Prevent situations from deteriorating into something worse and promote healing and good mental health,” said Alvarado.
Alvarado added the training program would be supported through state dollars, but also grants and private funds.
