Kentucky’s transportation cabinet is launching a new online system for issuing travel permits for drivers of overweight/over dimensional vehicles. The online portal uses real-time data.
Transportation Cabinet Public Affairs Spokesperson Jordan Smith said the cutting red tape won’t compromise safety on roadways.
“Because our information wasn’t necessarily updated in real time, sometimes they would get out there on roads and find that either there had been a new weight restriction posted on a bridge or there was some road closure and so some of these oversized loads would get out there and essentially be stuck.”
State transportation officials say almost every permit can now be issued from a computer at work or home anytime.
There were about 90,000 overweight/over-dimensional permits issued for fiscal year 2018. That number increased to more than 104,000 permits in fiscal year 2019.
