Governor Bevin Not Using His Veto Pen Yet

kentucky.com

Governor Matt Bevin says he’s not vetoed any bill passed by the 2019 General Assembly, but he admits there are many he still needs to review.  That doesn’t mean there won’t be vetoes.

Bevin said the crush of bills at the end of a session does create some concern. “I’ve had people who voted for bills coming to me and asking me to veto a bill they voted for because they didn’t read it.  And so when you jam a hundred and something bills out the door in the last hours of a given day, there’s going to be mistakes made, so there is the possibility that there will be some vetoes, but we’ll see,” said Bevin.

Bevin said spacing voting throughout the session would be helpful but the last minute push has occurred for years.

The governor said  the elimination of a bank franchise tax is appropriate.  “So having antiquated tax laws are a bad idea.  And if that means that we suddenly have less income, I’m not too concerned,  We’ll make up for it by having more people living here, banking here, and doing business here because it’s a more modernized tax system,” noted Bevin.

Bevin says there have been what he termed “a couple” of bills he let go without a signature.  He added he didn’t agree with them, but they didn’t do any harm.  Overall, the governor said a lot of good things came out of the session.

The legislature returns to Frankfort March 28th to consider overriding any vetoes.

Weku's Stu Johnson spoke with Governor Bevin about the possibility of vetoes after an event in Lexington Tuesday.
