The Kentucky Senate voted 30 to six Friday in favor of legislation to require reporting of drugs dispensed with an intent to end a pregnancy. The information would be sent to the state Vital Statistics Branch and would also be posted on the State Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ website.
Bill Sponsor Robby Mills of Henderson told his colleagues 47% of all reported abortions in Kentucky are what he termed “chemical non-surgical abortions.” “I believe it’s important to accurately report the abortions that are happening in our state, just as we accurately report other deaths, births, and all the other vital statistics that run through the vital statistics branch,”
Calling it another attempt to overturn the Roe v Wade abortion ruling, Louisville Senator Denise Harper Angel said many of the drugs listed in the legislation are used for many procedures other than abortions. “For example, to dilate a cervix, to insert an IUD to prevent pregnancy, to facilitate a miscarriage, also to accelerate childbirth. More women have had Percosen than have not. Why do we want to place a stigma on these drugs,” said Harper Angel
The bill now heads to the House.
