Kentucky Senate Republicans are still at work on their priority bill and it could be a few weeks before the measure is sent the floor. Senate Bill 1 would create a new review structure for state education standards and student testing. Senate President Robert Stivers says the legislation is undergoing further review. “We’re still talking through it and working through it because it is an important policy change, but not only that but it is a big policy change,” said Stivers.
The measure would also eliminate the Common Core Education Standards for Kentucky schools. Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer says the legislation will likely be rolled out sometime this month.
The Kentucky General Assembly is a little more than 20 days into its 60 day session and priority bills have been laid out in both chambers. Stivers says he doesn’t expect any major surprises during the remainder of the session. “There may be some differing mechanisms proposed to deal with various issues, but I think most of the issues are out in front and before one chamber or the other,” noted Stivers.
The 2016 session of the Kentucky General Assembly is scheduled to run through the end of March.?
