Bill to Clarify Police Disciplinary Process Heads to Full Senate

surfky

A proposed measure that would give more clarity in police disciplinary matters is moving through the Kentucky General Assembly.  With just a few days left in this session, the House bill passed out of a senate committee Monday.

J.D. Chaney with the Kentucky League of Cities, says a citizen's right to raise concerns about police actions doesn't change.  "It does nothing to change that access to the disciplinary process for the citizens," said Chaney. "What it does for the officer is provide a clear process and ensure that it's dealt with, either for or against the officer, in a transparent, open hearing process."

Nicolai Jilek, with the State Fraternal Order of Police, says the measure is not about protections for officers, but instead, a roadmap for disciplinary action.  Both men believe the legislation, if enacted into law, would help reduce the need for legal action following a police disciplinary hearing.?
