The All 'A' Classic high school basketball tournament is in Frankfort this week. Games for both boys and girls teams run through the weekend at the downtown convention center. Tourist and Convention Commission Director Joy Jeffries says the city is expected to see almost a $1.5 million economic impact. "As the tournament progresses there's less and less games during the day, so they've got a little more time,” said Jeffries. “Or, they can take a run out and check something out. Jeffries says man of the city’s attractions are in close proximity to the convention center.
Jeffries says about 5,000 people are expected in the capital city this week for the All 'A'. She says all proceeds from the tourney go to scholarships at the participating schools. "I've been able to interview for these scholarships ever since it's been in Frankfort since 2012 and oh my goodness, these kids are just so delightful, so delightful," added Jeffries.
While the downtown convention center is a great setting for athletics, there are meeting limitations. "It does not have adequate breakout space. We have the capital plaza hotel, right there on the same, it's contiguous to the convention center and we're able to do a lot of cooperative work with that," explained Jeffries.
Jeffries says the downtown convention center remains busy during basketball season. She says the collegiate Mid-South tournament and the high school 11th region tournaments are also scheduled at the facility. ?
