Keeneland Pays Tribute To Brother Of Dubai Ruler

Keeneland officials are remembering Sheikh Hamdan  bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  The deputy ruler of the emirate of Dubai had decades of involvement with the bluegrass Thoroughbred business.

The 75 year old Sheikh Hamdan died Wednesday.  He was the brother of the current ruler of Dubai.  In a statement, Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said “Sheikh Hamdan was a beloved figure around the world, cherished for his grace, humanity, loyalty, knowledge and sportsmanship. While he achieved great success as a Thoroughbred breeder and owner through his global Shadwell Farm operation, he made innumerable contributions to the sport – many of which were behind the scenes.”  Arvin went on to say Shadwell started to sponsor Keeneland’s one mile turf race in 1999 and it became the historic track’s first million dollar event in 2014.
