Eastern Kentucky University Athletics announced Tuesday the Colonels plan to open a scaled down football season in Huntington West Virginia. EKU is scheduled to take on Marshall University September fifth.
Eastern and Marshall have a history on the gridiron, being perennial post season playoff participants. The Colonels and Thundering Herd met each season from 1985 through 1992. EKU Athletics Director Matt Roan said while opening the season and the Walt Wells era at home would have been preferable, quote, “the circumstances obviously require flexibility.” Roan added there are plans to announce other games for this fall.
A representative from Eastern athletics said the ability to play this fall is predicated on the ability to follow protocol and achieve satisfactory, responsible results.
EKU Assistant AD for Communications and Branding Kevin Britton said since July 17th 409 COVID-19 tests were conducted for student-athletes, coaches, and staff members. 17 were positive.?
