Keeneland Exploring A Short July Racing Meet

Keeneland racing officials are hoping to run a shortened race meet in early July.  The traditional April spring meet was canceled due to concerns associated with coronavirus.

Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston says conversations are underway with officials at western Kentucky’s Ellis Park track. “We’ve had very positive conversations so far with Ellis Park about possibly taking some of their days, maybe a weekend or two where we could run a nice brief meet, but a meaty meet in terms of purse monies and quality fields and quality racing,” said Elliston.

Elliston admitted it’s unlikely fans would be in the stands at Keeneland in July, but it could mean putting four to five million dollars in purse money back into the market.  The Keeneland executive said it would provide an opportunity for key Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby prep races.  The Derby is now scheduled for Saturday, September fifth.

Elliston noted it would allow breeders of horses that win important races including Kentucky Oaks and Derby preps to increase the value of the siblings or the mares that produce those stakes winners.

The addition of July racing at Keeneland would need approval by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
