EKU Coach Looks For Team Depth to be Integral to Success This Season

Stu Johnson

Eastern Kentucky University opens its football season a week from Thursday at home against in state rival Morehead State.  Saturday night saw players and supporters joining together for the annual fan day event.

Mark Elder is in his third year as head coach of the Colonels.  Elder’s first team completed the season at three and eight and last year’s squad was four and seven.  The Cincinnati native looks for improvement this year. “I expect that we’re going to be taking a big step forward from year two to year three as far as competitive, as far as Saturday afternoon.  We’re in a position now that we have the depth and quality of players to be very competitive in the OVC,” said Elder.

When it comes to the conference, Jacksonville State has been the standout team.  Elder says it will be interesting to see if OVC squads, including his, can close that gap with Jacksonville State.?
