UK, City Police Offer Game-Day Traffic, Security Suggestions

Stu Johnson WEKU News

The start of the college football season in Lexington brings traffic and security suggestions from area law enforcement.  Officials with the University of Kentucky and the city of Lexington held a briefing Tuesday at Commonwealth Stadium.   UK Police Chief Joe Monroe urged fans to tailgate responsibly. He says that includes picking up trash in the lot. “Don’t engage in excessive drinking or behavior that is risky or offensive to the neighbors around you or small child who may be in the parking lots as well,” warnedMonroe.

UK’s chief says the campus remains a “no-fly zone” for drones.  Monroe says the Federal Aviation Administration predicts some 600,000 drones will be flying commercially within the next year.  A UK student was charged last year after a drone crashed inside the football stadium before the season opener.

Lexington Police Chief Mark Barnard says the world is different than a year ago with increased attention to the realities ofterrorism.  He says some security adjustments are always possible.  “We have to make sure people can still enjoy the event, but still are safe for everyone to come to.  So we have to make some of those modifications and we’ve done that,” noted Barnard.

Backpacks and large bags are once again prohibited in the stadium.  UK Chief Monroe says a social media app called WAZE offers up-to-date information about traffic issues on game days. ?
