Officials with Kentucky’s Horse Racing Commission have announced committee structure and membership for the upcoming year. The commission executive director says the focus of committees won’t change significantly.
Marc Guilfoil was named commission director the first of this year after serving as a part of the horse racing agency since 1988. Governor Bevin named 12 new members this spring. Guilfoil says he’s well acquainted with many serving on the commission. He says they’re new to the board but not to the sport. “They’re all very in tuned with what’s going on in the sport or they wouldn’t be sitting on the racing commission.”
After several years of in-activity, Guilfoil says the racing commission’s Safety and Welfare Committee is back on the meeting schedule.
He says the panel will look at safety helmets for assistant starters in the starting gate. “I know some of the tracks in the state of Kentucky require them as employees to have helmets. We want to have a regulation in place with that with obviously some specifics on the helmets,” explained Guilfoil.
The next full commission meeting is scheduled July seventh.?
