A substantially undersized Eastern Kentucky University Colonel team fought valiantly Sunday night, but it wasn't enough to keep up with number one Kentucky. UK beat EKU 82-49 before a full house at Rupp Arena. After the game, Eastern Coach Jeff Neubauer gave high praise for UK's defensive effort. "Our team, I told them, they were just guarded by the best defensive team in the modern era of college basketball. And I'm not exaggerating a little bit when I say that," said Neubauer.
UK Assistant Coach John Robic says guarding much smaller players creates its own challenge. "This was a tough game for us just because of the size differential. You have problems when you have seven footers guarding 6'2 on the perimeter and I thought we did that very well today," said Robic.
Eastern Kentucky was held to 26 percent shooting, while Kentucky shot 57 percent. Both teams have a week break before their next games. Next Saturday, EKU takes on Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and UK hosts North Carolina.?
