Expansion Proposed At The Home Of The Kentucky Derby

The home of the Kentucky Derby is planning another round of renovations that would add more seating at Churchill Downs racetrack. Churchill Downs Inc., owner of its namesake track, has filed plans with Louisville planning officials for a project called Churchill Downs Rooftop Garden. It continues the company's strategy to maximize revenues from the track's premier events — the Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

The project calls for construction of a two-story structure near the starting gate at the top of the track's homestretch.

The new facility would include betting windows, concessions and enclosed and open areas, with an expansion of seating. The project calls for removing two buildings.

Company spokesman John Asher says discussion of the plan is premature because several steps remain.

The Courier-Journal first reported the track's plans.
