Lexington City Council To Review Commission For Racial Justice And Equality Report

foxlexington.com

Lexington city council members are expected later this week to take a deeper dive into the recommendations of the mayor’s Commission for Racial Justice and Equality.  The extensive report was released the end of September.

The report was compiled after more than 70 subcommittee members met on various issues over the summer.  It includes 54 recommendations.  Council Member Richard Moloney last week indicated he thought council should wait for the mayor to propose a course of action.“I just think we’re jumping the gun right here because the way I read this we are taking it over from you.  Y’all may disagree with me on that, but if we do take this over, we need the right people there, the state, and health department, and schools,” said Moloney.

The commission examined issues like law enforcement, health disparities, housing, and economic opportunity.   Mayor Linda Gorton said her staff has been taking a deep dive into the report.  “We have teams of people who are looking at every single recommendation and we are understanding through law and through our other divisions and departments what we can legally do.  We do intend to bring recommendations,” noted Gorton.

Gorton said formal recommendations may not be ready to present this week to the committee as a whole.
