Lexington City Officials Recognize Southland Drive Revitalization

Stu Johnson

Lexington city officials formally recognized completion of a $2.1 million revitalization of the Southland Drive area Thursday.  The improvements include wider sidewalks, upgraded traffic signals, landscaping, and art installations.

10th District Council Member Amanda Mays Bledsoe said business leases and homeowner property values are rising. “This is an area where it’s clear that the public investment of the infrastructure, from the sidewalks to the storm water improvements really multiplied the private investment.  You’ve seen so many businesses here expand, beautify, increase,” said Mays Bledsoe.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said the changes greatly improved safety for walkers and cyclists in the area.  She said a mural is scheduled to be painted on the railroad overpass next spring.
