The traditional Red Kettle holiday campaign orchestrated by Salvation Army is underway in Kentucky. As is the case with so many traditional activities, the 2020 program to raise funds for the social service organization is different.
Central Kentucky Salvation Army Community Relations-Development Coordinator Krista Whitaker says there are no hired bell ringers this holiday season. “We would ordinarily put folks in the fan and drive them to and from locations and we just didn’t feel that that was the appropriate thing to do for our community as to group people up like that. This way everyone will be responsible for their own transportation,” said Whitaker.
So, Whitaker said using volunteers only will impact the Red Kettle ringing schedule between now and Christmas Eve. She noted stands will be set up outside businesses on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. In addition to a virtual kettle option again, Whitaker added drive-by donation drop-off events are planned at three locations in Lexington December fifth plus similar ones in Scott County December 12th and Jessamine County December 19th.
