Devastating flooding this summer in eastern Kentucky hasn’t put the brakes on election preparations. Officials in Knott County say the nine voting centers are ready to open on Election Day with around 75 poll workers.
Knott County Clerk Reci Cornett said she’s been putting the call out for people to vote in the midterm election.
“And I believe they will. Because our county has been devastated through the pandemic and through the flooding but our county is strong and I know our people are strong. And I just want to tell them, stay strong and encourage them to vote,” said Cornett.
Cornett said her office issued more than 500 absentee ballots before the deadline. That’s around 200 more than in previous elections.
The polling official said many of those ballot requests cited the inability to make it to a polling site. Cornett added that flood recovery is still an obstacle.
“We still have some destruction up in these hollers. We are trying to make a way on election day or any day that if someone would call, we would have someone to go pick them up and bring them to vote if they wanted to and take them back,” said Cornett.
Cornett said early voting is open now. People can cast a ballot at any of the nine voting centers and still vote in their home precinct’s races.
