$24.4 million in Abandoned Mine Lands funding headed to eastern Kentucky

Snapshot

Another multi-million-dollar round of funding was announced for several economic development efforts in eastern Kentucky. The money will benefit projects in nine counties.

Governor Andy Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers announced $24.4 million in Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program money earlier this week. Eleven projects throughout eastern Kentucky will receive funding.

The biggest designation is $6.6 million to Martin County for the installation of an apple packing and sorting facility. Elliot County is getting $4.6 million for an emergency services center. Floyd County is receiving $3 million for an industrial park.

Officials expect the 11 projects to retain or create more than 200 jobs.

On Monday the Appalachian Regional Commission also announced several million dollars in funding for projects in eastern Kentucky.
