Martin County is losing its top elected official for the third time in two years. The resignation comes just before the November midterm election.

Martin County Judge Executive Colby Kirk announced on Friday that he is resigning from office. Kirk’s final day will be Friday, October 28th, officially leaving the position vacant at 4 that afternoon.

Martin County has had its share of instability when it comes to the Judge Executive's office.

Kirk has been serving as interim Judge Executive since January, when he was sworn in to replace Judge Executive Victor Slone. Slone died in January after battling cancer. Slone himself had replaced William Davis, who abruptly resigned in March of last year.

Kirk says he will use his final two weeks in office to ensure a smooth transition to the next Judge Executive. Kirk is leaving the post to take over as CEO of One East Kentucky.

It’s unclear who will replace Kirk before the next Judge Executive is elected.
