U.S. Senate Candidates Face Off In Debate-Like Program

Stu Johnson

The two U.S. Senate candidates Monday night took vastly different approaches to probably their only debate-like appearance before November third.

Democratic Challenger and former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath spent much of the hour questioning 36 year veteran Congressman Mitch McConnell’s leadership ability.  The Senate GOP Majority Leader spoke of the billions of dollars he had steered to his home state.

McGrath offered a grade of “F” for the U.S. response to the coronavirus. “We have a major international crisis where no one in the world is looking to the United States for leadership.  Think about that.  It’s because we have such poor leaders right now,” said McGrath.

For his part, McConnell said he guided the first COVID relief funding package through his chamber. He claims House democrats don’t want to negotiate a second round of funding and that McGrath’s campaign tactic is lacking. “I think her entire campaign is she’s a marine, she’s a mom, and I’ve been there too long,” said McConnell

In addition to the current pandemic, McConnell and McGrath also fielded questions about the Supreme Court makeup, policing issues, eastern Kentucky economics, and the Affordable Care Act.  The debate was held at WKYT studios in Lexington.
