Kentucky’s Primary 2020 results are in, more than a month later than most political observers would have said earlier this year. County election officials may already be thinking about a general election just over four months away.
Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins said he was concerned about handling the large number of mail-in ballots. But, the county clerk added that process went well, it was in-person voting at UK’s Kroger Stadium that had some issues. Blevins said states which routinely do more mail-in voting have centralized issuance and receipt facilities.
“They can through these, kind of a, automated scanner devices that will check barcodes and because your signature is in a particular location on the envelope, they can actually do optical reads of your signature and machinery can verify it’s your ballot much faster than humans.”
If COVID-19 conditions warrant a similar approach in November, Blevins would also like to see extending in-person voting to about a week and have more drop boxes.
In the highly competitive U.S. Senate Primary, former military pilot Amy McGrath outdistanced Louisville State Representative Charles Booker in a tight racing, earning the right to take on long standing Senator Mitch McConnell.
