Candidate Filing Deadlines Change In 2020

Kentuckians running for state legislative offices and some county positions will have to make up their minds a bit earlier than in previous years.  New filing deadlines for many partisan and some non-partisan races go into effect in 2020.  Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins says that deadline has shifted from the end of January to January 10.

“Anybody that’s thinking about filing for candidacy may be lounging in the thought that they can wait until the end of January to get their paperwork in and that’s not necessarily true, depending on the office you’re seeking.  So, we wanted to get it out there so anybody that wants to participate as a candidate, won’t miss the deadline by thinking it’s still like it used to be,” said Blevins.

Blevins says something that didn’t change is the deadline for changing political party affiliation.  “Nothing has changed on registration, but if you want to change your party affiliation between now and the May Primary, you have to do it before December 31, otherwise you will be ineligible to vote in the Primary.  That’s to prevent people from changing their party affiliation right up to the last minute,” noted Blevins.

Blevins says the filing deadline for independents is Jan. 28.  He says the date for those seeking a school board seat in Lexington or to serve as a Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor is now June second.?
