Kentucky's Only Female Governor Not Sure Why There Hasn't Been Another One

Stu Johnson

The only woman to hold state government’s top job says it’s hard to say when Kentucky will elect another female governor.  Martha Layne Collins participated in a Lexington event Monday as part of the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” monument effort.

Collins held the office of governor from 1983 until 1987.  The long-time democrat says there’s no question there are women across Kentucky who could become governor. “Maybe we just haven’t cultivated somebody with that intense desire or maybe there’s somebody out there that we ought to be looking at and encouraging them to run,” said Collins

Collins said raising money and intense scrutiny are two other aspects of running for office.  And the former Kentucky governor said some women may be hesitant to ask their families to make the kind of sacrifice needed during campaigns.

WEKU's  Stu Johnson spoke with Former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins following the "Breaking the Bronze Ceiling" event Monday in Lexington.
