Some 600,000 registered voters across Kentucky are receiving verification cards from the State Board of Elections. It’s aimed at getting up to date information about voters who may have moved outside of the Commonwealth.
Officials with the Secretary of State’s Office say cards went out to people who have not voted in the past four years or made any changes to their voter registration during that time. If the postcard contains the correct address, voters need not do anything. Anyone receiving a card with incorrect information, like a wrong address, should mark ‘return to sender’ and put it back in the mail. Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins says this will help to firm up voter rolls. “So, we’ll get a partial cleanup of the rolls without doing what I would call a blind purge, which is purging without a response from the voters themselves,” said Blevins.
If voters don’t respond following a second mailing, a waiting period of two federal elections begins to see if voters cast ballots or update their information. Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes says no voter will be removed from the rolls without due process.
