Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes recognized Lexington Lafayette High School Wednesday for 100 percent voter registration among eligible students. She told the Lafayette seniors their school was one of only two in the state to claim that accomplishment.
Grimes hopes it translates to higher voting.
“If you look at our registered voters right now that are new since our 2016 election, more than half of them are 18 to 25 year olds. That’s a huge number,” said Grimes.
Gabriella Epley graduated from Lafayette last year and now attends Berea College. She says she wants elected representatives to know that there are young people engaged who are showing up. Epley says those same young voters have opinions which can be expressed in voting for certain candidates.
Graduating Senior Eli Dreyer helped lead the effort at Lafayette. He says there are various issues which impact students’ interest in voting. “Like here in our school we had our walkout and that was directly related to gun violence, but there’s numerous things. The beauty of this school is it’s a very diverse culture. We have all opinions represented here,” noted Dreyer.
The other Kentucky school reaching the 100% voter registration mark was Highland High School in Fort Thomas.
