Former fighter pilot Amy McGrath won the Democratic nomination in Kentucky’s 6th congressional district last night. The crowd at a community potluck supper in Richmond cheered when Lexington Mayor Jim Gray conceded the race.
McGrath , a political newcomer received 49 percent of the vote to Mayor Gray’s 41 percent. state Senator Reggie Thomas and three others were also defeated by McGrath. She says the key to her victory is people who care.
“People really care. I mean they care about this country. And maybe for many of them for the first time they’re stepping up. Sort of like me and saying it’s not good enough to sit back and watch. I have to do something.”
She’ll now prepare for another political battle as she takes on Republican incumbent Andy Barr in the 19 county region.
Her strategy for taking on Barr is to continue to do what she’s been doing.
“You don’t do anything crazy. You just tell people the truth . It’s about time for that, right?”
McGrath thanked everyone who supported her including her campaign team and her family. She dedicated the night and the win to her dad who died six weeks ago.
